St Anthony’s House

A relaxing garden for our residents to enjoy.

Weclome to St Anthony’s House, a peaceful residential retirement care home in the Cornish town of Liskeard.

We at St Anthony’s strive to maintain a peaceful, caring and homely atmosphere for our residents.

We cater for elderly residents over the age of 65. We have 16 single rooms, 10 of which are en-suite. We are able to care for up to 5 residents with early stage dementia.

Residents are free to enjoy their spacious bedrooms, join in community events in our large lounge and dining room, or relax in the garden.

St Anthony’s care home staff are trained to provide clients with all the daily support you, or your relatives may need, and we’d be happy to discuss your requirements.

We have 20 members of staff with varying degrees of experience. All are trained to a high standard and regular courses mean that they keep their care skills level up to date. If you would like to know more about what St Anthony’s can offer please feel free to contact us either via this web page or telephone 01579 342308.

Moving To St Anthoy’s Residential Care Home

We realise that moving permanently to a residential home is a big decision to make. We would encourage families of prospective residents to try to get the person concerned to make their own decision though often this is not practicable. We encourage visits; we suggest the prospective resident comes in for a short stay if there is any uncertainty; we would always encourage questions from a prospective resident in an effort to put their mind at ease.

We would always have to do an individual assessment on each prospective resident, not so much to discover whether they are suitable for St Anthony’s residential retirement care home, but is St Anthony’s suitable for them?

With a bit more detailed information it may become clear that St Anthony’s cannot provide the correct level of care and end up having to move the resident on to a more suitable establishment: That’s not fair on the resident concerned.

We are happy for residents to bring in some of their own belongings, photos, ornaments, pictures, their own TV (We provide flat screen TVs in all the rooms), and items of furniture; though we would discourage whole suites – the rooms are of limited size. We have to say no to pets although a small fresh water fish tank or bird cage may be negotiated. We would definitely say no to cats and dogs. Not that we don’t like cats and dogs but we have our own border collie called Marley who has the freedom of the house – not that he wanders far from the communal rooms or my office – unless you have a ball to throw.

Care For Clients with Dementia

A question we are often asked is ‘Do we cater for people with dementia’? The answer is generally yes – However: We are registered for 16 beds but within that 16 we can accept up to 5 people with early stage dementia but, like every other prospective resident we have to do an assessment prior to admission. As dementia is a progressive desease it is possible, and I stress possible, that we may have to ask for the resident to move to a more specialist unit should the problems caused by the dementia become beyond our capability.

I can state that since we took over St Anthony’s in 2002 we have had to move on only 3 people to a specialist unit or nursing home. It would be wrong of me in this short article to say what we think we can or cannot do as every person is an individual and dementia will affect different people differently. The individual assessment, combined with reports from doctors, community nurses, hospitals and community psychiatric nurses, is our benchmark on which our decissions are made.
